The Sunset Tower Hotel was famous before and after the 1950s, but the building really takes you back to that grand time. Though the new owners renovated the lobby and removed its Art Deco brilliance, the exterior is still the same. John Wayne and Howard Hughes both lived here, and the hotel has made cameos in numerous movies over the years. added on 2007-04-18

The brightly neon Rae's is an LA institution. Neither the interior nor the waitstaff has changed much in the last fifty years, and the food is legitimately good and cheap added on 2007-04-17

Pann's is one of the greatest retro coffee shops in the city. Designed by Armet & Davis -- popular architects during the 1950s and 1960s -- the place has a classic look. After a recent renovation, the owner Jim Poulis decided to reduce the prices to 1958 levels. The food is still delicious and made from scratch. added on 2007-04-17

It's closed for remodeling, and we don't know how much of the Palladium's original interior and design will remain. However, the Palladium is a great landmark for 1950s LA. It was a veritable temple of the big-band and swing scene. Lawrence Welk filmed his TV show here, and it used to have the biggest dance floor in town. added on 2007-04-17

An archetypal 1950s bowling alley. They still have the original sign and some of the original interior, though the sports bar and café are a little at odds with the anachronistic vibe. added on 2007-04-17

This bar with blue benches and blue lighting is a favorite retro spot in the neighborhood. Crowded nightly with hipsters and LA cool kids, it tries for a 1950s feel, but it's essentially a dive bar. added on 2007-04-17

Open since 1947, the Apple Pan has some of the juiciest burgers in LA and looks the way it did back when it first became popular in the early 1950s. Seating is at the large U-shaped bar, and the service is gruff. However, the no-frills ambiance is what makes it a classic. The restaurant is still in the same family that owned it over 50 years ago. added on 2007-04-17
