Marianna Mayer has observed (The Unicorn and the Lake), "The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison." What more can one say?

The Unicorn stands about 7" tall. added on 2008-02-05

This porcelain dishware is the ingenious creation of Lorena Barrezueta, an amazingly talented artist and potter who we were lucky enough to know back in our Brooklyn days. We bought a few of her pieces after visiting her studio in Williamsburg, and not a day goes by that we don't use one of them. It's rare to see the words "witty" and "ironic" when referring to porcelain dishware, but her thoughtful, handmade pieces are anything but ordinary. Cast from aluminum takeout containers, her "Gourmet Collection" comes in a variety of gorgeous colored overglazes and all sorts of shapes and sizes to perfectly match any meal or dish. added on 2007-11-20

This guy is so much more than simply a paperweight in the shape of a bird. First of all, he's an owl, eternally wise and watchful. Secondly he's made of nambu cast iron which is a traditional Japanese craft that dates back to the middle of the 17th century. Thirdly, his rough hewn texture and badass black coat is the result of a rust-resistant Japanese lacquer glazed called urushi. Sure he's hefty enough to weigh down any paper you throw at him, but let's just keep that between us. 3" tall. added on 2007-11-20

Normally the thought of mushrooms growing on our walls would give us the willies, but these shelves are anything but creepy. Made from exquisitely carved basswood, these gorgeous mushrooms prove once and for all you need not be a hookah-smoking caterpillar to appreciate fungi-inspired designs. added on 2007-11-20

This set of medium-sized cards was designed by Charles Eames in 1952, and contains 32 interlocking pieces featuring delightful and colorful images of what the Eames' referred to as the "good stuff". Pictures of "familiar and nostalgic objects from the animal, mineral and vegetable kingdoms," as well as gorgeous textiles and patterns the couple collected on their world travels. It's a wonderfully fun and inspiring set, and even comes with instructions showing you a few of the many different ways the cards can be stacked, piled, and locked together.

Each card measures 7" x 4.5" and features the Eames starburst logo on the back. added on 2007-11-20

We met Palo Samko earlier this year at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, and like pretty much everyone else there, immediately fell in love with his work. Palo is a stunning woodworker and furniture maker. He's got a style all his own that lands somewhere between the raw-ness of George Nakashima and playfulness of Alexander Girard. We don't sell furniture here in the Shoppe, but we are very excited to offer these sleek and beautiful Rocking Bird sculptures. Each one is handcrafted by Palo, and is a perfect example of his remarkable craftsmanship.

Each bird is unique and may not look exactly like what you see here. (Though it will be close.) Each measures approximate 7" long x 1.5" wide x 1.5" high. added on 2007-11-20

The Coniglio hat is pure genius. The pink bunny ears contain headphones, which are switched off when the ears stand up, indicating that the person is attentive. When they are wrapped around the ears then music can be listened to. The Coniglio hat has not been very popular in the Nascar/Pro-Wrestling demographic, however. added on 2007-11-12
